The sale of Gloucestershire Airport to the Horizon Group is nearing completion, according to Gloucester City Council and Cheltenham Borough Council.

Both councils are the current joint shareholders of the airport, located on a 375-acre site in Staverton. The final stages of legal, financial, and operational requirements are being completed in preparation for transferring ownership to Horizon Group.

A spokesperson said: “The sale of an airport is an extremely complex undertaking and naturally takes time. However, we are now in a position to move toward completing the deal, and we anticipate bringing the process to a conclusion shortly. Communication with the Horizon Group remains constructive and will be crucial as all parties continue to work collaboratively towards the completion of the sale.”

Key economic asset

The airport serves as a regional hub for aviation, supporting general aviation, training, business flights, and commercial activities. Alongside its aviation facilities, the site includes two established business parks and planning consent for additional employment space, positioning it as one of the most significant economic assets in the area.

The Horizon Group was selected as the preferred buyer after a competitive process and has presented plans to safeguard aviation operations while encouraging economic investment and development.

Collaboration between councils and buyer

Gloucester City Council and Cheltenham Borough Council remain focused on completing the transaction in line with all legal, financial, and regulatory requirements.

Both councils are conducting detailed assessments to ensure continuity of services for airport users and on-site businesses while maximising long-term benefits for the local economy and taxpayers.
