A man from Gloucester has been sentenced to five years in prison for three burglaries that caused significant distress to the victims.

Jason Brown, 53, was jailed following an investigation by Gloucestershire Police, during which CCTV footage and forensic evidence proved his involvement.

The first burglary took place on 6th November 2025, when Brown broke into a property in Abbeydale by smashing through a conservatory window. He stole sentimental jewellery belonging to the victim’s late wife, along with a valuable camera collection and the victim's car.

The stolen car was recovered this month, abandoned not far from the property. DNA from a windowpane linked Brown to the crime. The victim spoke in court about the profound impact of losing treasured items, saying, “Sadly, this will now not happen, and my children will not be able to own treasured items that would have allowed them physical memories of their mother."

Further burglaries

Just over a week later, on 15th November, Brown targeted a shed in Brookthorpe, near Gloucester, attempting entry using a shovel while covering his face with a mask—which briefly slipped, revealing his identity to officers reviewing CCTV footage.

Inside the home, Brown stole cash, golf clubs, a ring and credit cards. Once again, forensic testing linked him to the crime through DNA obtained from the shovel left at the scene.

The victim recounted the distressing experience in court, stating: "The anxiety from the aftermath of this is overwhelming. The lack of sleep I had over the next few weeks…the anger that someone could break into my castle."

On 30th November, Brown committed his final burglary at a property not far from his home address in Matson. Entering via a large dog flap, he stole several Christmas presents from under the tree while one of the victims was asleep on the sofa.

Indoor CCTV captured Brown in the kitchen wearing a dressing gown and slippers during the burglary. The homeowner addressed Brown in her statement: "Your envy and sense of entitlement led you to invade a home that I worked hard to build. Actions like yours bring fear and anxiety into a place that should feel safe.”

Arrest and sentencing

Police obtained substantial forensic evidence which conclusively linked Brown to the burglaries. After avoiding arrest for several days, Brown handed himself in on 8th December. During his police interview, he provided no comments, except challenging officers to “prove it.”

Charged with three counts of burglary, Brown pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court on 20th January and was sentenced on 22nd January to five years in prison.

Brown received 30 months for the burglary on 6th November and 15 months for each of the subsequent counts, with sentences running consecutively.

Mr Recorder Mawhinney recognised the emotional and psychological harm Brown had caused to the victims and noted that the final burglary occurred while one victim was asleep, commenting, “I can't imagine the utter terror they would have suffered had they woke.”

PC Tim Burch from the Gloucester Neighbourhood Support Team condemned Brown’s actions.

“Brown is a career criminal and a prolific burglar," PC Burch said.

“He has shown a complete disregard for the safety and wellbeing of others, repeatedly targeting homes and leaving a trail of disruption, misery, and fear behind him.”

He added: “I hope this brings a measure of justice and reassurance to the victims and wider community. I would like to thank the victims for showing courage in attending the sentencing and providing invaluable victim impact statements.”
