Gloucester's GL1 Leisure Centre begins £8 million upgrade
Major renovations to enhance sports facilities and community access
A major upgrade of GL1 Leisure Centre in Gloucester has commenced, marking the start of an £8 million investment to transform the city’s flagship sports facility.
The refurbishment plans include a brand-new gym, an improved soft play area, enhanced water play features, upgraded reception hub, revamped changing rooms, and the introduction of EGYM equipment.
These enhancements aim to modernize GL1, supporting the community's pursuit of a healthier, active lifestyle while creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Visitor feedback has inspired the reopening of the women’s only gym next year, featuring new flooring, air conditioning, and enhanced security.
Part of Gloucester City Council's wider investment in leisure facilities, this initiative also involves upgrades to Oxstalls Sports Park.
Recent improvements at GL1 have included energy-efficient lighting, new indoor cycling bikes, and pool floor refurbishment, laying the groundwork for further transformation.
Councillor Caroline Courtney emphasized the project’s significance for the community, promising an enhanced experience for members and visitors.
Ivan Horsfall Turner, Chief Executive of Freedom Leisure, highlighted the planned enhancements as crucial for meeting the community's evolving needs.
As contractors progress with detailed design work, construction is anticipated to begin in September, with completion expected by autumn 2027.
