The Forest of Dean District Council is spotlighting its initiatives to tackle long-term empty homes during National Empty Homes Week, taking place from 9th to 15th March.

Currently, the district has 501 homes that have been vacant for more than six months.

The Council has an Empty Homes Officer dedicated to aiding property owners with advice and support.

Their assistance spans various areas, including selling, renting, refurbishing, and understanding Council Tax discounts and exemptions.

Additionally, they provide information on long-term empty premiums and grant funding opportunities.

Owners who engage early with the Council can benefit from tailored guidance to navigate the personal, financial, or health challenges they face.

Where informal methods do not yield results, enforcement options may be considered with support from the Environmental Health, Planning, and Legal teams.

Recent Success

In one noteworthy case, a home left empty for several years due to inheritance issues was successfully sold.

The Council's guidance on the sales process cleared initial misconceptions about upfront estate agency fees.

This enabled the property to be placed on the market, selling within a week.

The new owner completed refurbishment works, returning the home to use which positively impacted the surrounding area.

Reflecting on the journey, the former owner noted the Council's intervention as "very supportive and understanding," aiding in resolving ongoing difficulties.

Call to Action

Cabinet Member for Thriving Communities, Cllr Jackie Dale expressed that empty homes are "a wasted resource."

Dale said the Council’s collaboration with owners turns these vacancies into residences, thereby supporting community strength.

Dale also encouraged those with empty properties to seek assistance.
