A dispersal order has been issued for Gloucester city centre after an increase in anti-social behaviour. It means police can move people on from the area for up to 48 hours - and they face being arrested if they return.

The order, which runs until 11am on Friday (August 15th), also covers surrounding areas including Bedford Street, Whitfield Street and Station Road.

Gloucestershire Police said it was using its powers under Section 34 of the Anti-Social, Crime and Policing Act 2014, to issue the order to "prevent further crime and disorder".

It gives officers the power to "direct any person in a public place who is creating, or likely to create, disorder, or making - or likely to make members of the public feel harassed, alarmed or distressed" to leave - and not return until the order expires.

Officers have urged anyone who sees anti-social behaviour in the area while the order is in place to contact police.

Ash Gardner, Gloucester Neighbourhood Inspector states ‘‘we will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our City. A 50 year old male has already been arrested for breaching the direction to leave.

"The public quite rightly expect to come into out city without fear of violence, harassment, alarm or/and distress, equally, our business community do not either.

"The Neighbourhood team will continue to work with partners to look at long term interventions and prevention to curtail this behaviour.

"I will review the dispersal when it expires and will not hesitate to authorise another if lawful and proportionate to do so (The maximum I can do at any one time is up to 48hrs)’’
