It's one of the most hidden and insidious crimes in our communities

Crimestoppers is today (10 June) launching a new initiative in Gloucestershire - aimed at tackling one of the most hidden and insidious crimes in our communities - modern slavery.

It's designed to raise awareness of the warning signs that someone may be being exploited and to encourage the public to report concerns safely and anonymously, and comes as estimations show more than 130,000 people are victims of the crime in the UK.

Modern slavery is said to be often hidden behind closed doors and within everyday settings.

Victims may be forced to work in sectors such as care, beauty, construction, agriculture, or hospitality, frequently under threats, coercion, or violence.

Some businesses may also act as fronts for other criminal activities, including drug trafficking, illegal prostitution, and money laundering.

Crimestoppers emphasises that these crimes are often carried out in plain sight - victims are coerced, manipulated, and silenced, making it difficult for communities to recognise the signs.

They add that many victims live in cramped, unsafe conditions, without access to their passports or identification, and are often too frightened or controlled to seek help.

The signs that someone might be a victim of modern slavery:

  • Signs of injury, malnutrition, or poor hygiene
  • Living in overcrowded or dirty conditions
  • Lack of access to personal documents
  • Exhibiting fear, anxiety, or distress
  • Appearing under the influence or control of others
  • Being transported early in the morning or late at night frequently
  • Wearing inappropriate clothing for their work
  • Isolation from the community or family
  • Limited or no personal freedom or control over their environment

'Often hidden in plain sight'

Beth Simpson, Gloucestershire Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, said: "Modern slavery is a crime often hidden in plain sight.

"Victims are forced into silence through manipulation, violence, and fear. We want communities to be vigilant and know what signs to look for.

"If you suspect someone is being exploited, report it - safely and anonymously. Your information could be the key to rescuing someone and stopping these criminals."

If you suspect someone is being exploited, or if you have information about individuals involved in modern slavery, you are urged to act - safely and anonymously.

Your confidential tip could help rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
