The Nippy Chippy in Stonehouse says the price of fish has more than doubled in the months since Christmas.

They say they have worked hard to keep their prices the same, but they can no longer absorb the rising costs.

A large cod and chips will now set customers back £12.50 and although they have received some ‘shocked faces’ the majority of customers have been supportive about the change.

Manager of the Nippy Chippy, Brad Lee, told Greatest Hits Radio: “So far the support has been amazing.

“Obviously we’ve let them know in advance what’s happening, why it’s going up.

“Some of them that obviously haven’t heard about it, they do have a little bit of a shocked face when they come in and I ask them for £12.50 for a portion of fish and chips, but a lot of them are also saying I paid that last year at the sea side anyway.”

It comes amid hikes in employers national insurance and minimum wage which will see businesses throughout the country having to rethink prices to help with running costs.

The Nippy Chippy says they’ve already taken a hit from the 60% rise in fish prices.

Brad Lee said: “60% is a big jump but you can’t just straight away go 60% pass it on straight to the customer.

“We’ve had to take a major hit of that so probably more like 45% we’re taking and then 15% passed on to the customer.”
