With a predicted spell of extreme heat this week, Bristol Water is urging visitors to avoid swimming in its reservoirs and lakes.

The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme heat on Wednesday and Thursday, anticipating an exceptional spell of hot and humid weather across the region.

Bristol Water reminds the public that its reservoirs are active operational sites, housing deep, cold water, hidden machinery and powerful currents beneath the surface, all of which pose significant risks.

In response to these conditions, access to Cheddar Reservoir has been temporarily closed to minimise risks to visitors and alleviate strain on emergency services.

Richard Stanbrook, Bristol Water’s General Manager of Drinking Water Services, emphasised the importance of staying safe.

Stanbrook said, “We know our reservoirs can look very tempting in hot weather, but they are operational sites and it is never safe to enter the water."

Bristol Water advises enjoying these spaces safely from the shore and adhering to safety measures in place during the extreme heat.

Visitors are encouraged to follow any temporary closures or advice for their own protection and to assist emergency services during this busy period.
