Bourton-on-the-water residents take action against over tourism
Residents are fed up of the small Cotswold village been overtaken by visitors
Residents of Bourton-on-the-Water have expressed their concern with the impact of overtourism, leading to a protest over the weekend to reclaim the village green.
Bourton Residents’ Voice oragnised the event, they emphasised that the action is not intended to ban tourists but to encourage a balance between visitor and resident needs.
They highlighted that pressure from tourism is felt throughout the year and calls for proper management of these challenges.
The group wants existing laws and regulations to be enforced and for residents to move freely and safely around the village.
District councillor Jon Wareing said residents are 'fed up that the heart of their village no longer feels like a place that belongs to the community.
Councillor Len Wilkins pointed out that residents have been compelled to take action due to insufficient responses from councils.
Amanda Davis, a local resident, stressed the need for respect between tourists and locals while seeking a reduction of peak-time visits.
County councillor Roger Whyborn acknowledged the benefits and challenges of tourism, assuring residents that steps are being taken to manage the impact.
He said, ''We will continue to work closely with Bourton-on-the-Water Parish Council, Gloucestershire County Council and other partners to explore what practical steps can be taken.
We encourage residents to engage with us on the specific actions they would like to see, so that together we can focus on solutions that are both effective and achievable.”
