This Saturday (28 June), additional police will once again be patrolling Gloucester city centre as part of Operation Comet.

The operation, which has been running monthly since the start of the year, sees officers tackle offenders who operate in the night-time economy.

Over the last few months, the operation has resulted in arrests for drug offences and drink driving. Drugs, including cannabis and cocaine, as well as nitrous oxide canisters have also been seized.

Last month, Gloucester was recognised as a destination that provides a safe and welcoming night out by the Association of Town and City Management, who awarded the city a purple flag for the eighth year running.

Operation Comet looks to create safer spaces by preventing youth harm, anti-social behaviour, violence against women and girls, knife crime and the use and sale of drugs during the night-time economy.

Inspector Ash Gardner, from Gloucester Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Gloucester is rightly recognised as a safe place for people to enjoy a night out.

“We want to ensure that this continues and will aim to stop anyone who comes to the city looking to commit crime.

“Since starting Operation Comet, we have already seen the huge impact it is having on deterring criminals from coming to our city.”

Officers continue to work with partners which include working alongside other organisations including Night Angels, Street Pastors, Night Safe officers, street medics and the licensed premises.

Members of the public are encouraged to come and speak to officers and let them know of any concerns they may have so that they can be acted upon.
