Toyah Willcox has revealed that a movie about Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch, the YouTube video series she records with her husband Robert Fripp, is in the works.

Shortly after the start of lockdown in 2020, King Crimson legend Robert Fripp and Toyah began recording weekly cover versions of songs from their kitchen while wearing comedic outfits.

The duo have since covered a plethora of artists including AC/DC, Metallica, Nirvana, Slipknot, Billy Idol, Sex Pistols, Rammstein, Radiohead, Limp Bizkit, David Bowie and Foo Fighters to name but a few.

Toyah and Robert’s Sunday Lunch has since spawned a live show and the duo embark on a major UK tour later this month and into October.

In an interview with Eonmusic, Toyah has now confirmed that plans are afoot for a movie about Sunday Lunch.

Commenting on what material they’re performing on tour, Toyah said: “Well, the Sunday Lunch phenomenon, which is a worldwide phenomenon which a movie's being made about, it's basically, we picked up on classic rock, and our treatment of rock is; if you can teach Mozart and Beethoven in schools, then why can't you teach classic rock? Because that's what it is now; rock from Led Zeppelin, rock from Black Sabbath; it's classic, it's never going to go away.”

Quizzed further about the movie, Toyah replied: “We have a documentary crew following us, and we have quite a big production company scripting an idea at the moment. Obviously we won't be in it. It's for actors to play, but that's all in the back kind of pool of what do you call pre-production. All of that's going on.”

Toyah went on to say she was unsure when the movie will come into fruition, saying: “I mean, movies take years, you know, for the even scripts to be accepted, so who knows what will happen?”

Sunday Lunch Live

Speaking to The Telegraph last October, Robert Fripp said not everyone is a fan of Sunday Lunch: “(Sunday Lunch has) upset some King Crimson fans. At the beginning of lockdown, my wife handed me a tutu and a pair of her black tights and took me to the end of the garden and put on Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

“My wife insists performers have a responsibility to lift people’s spirits in hard times. Do I respect that? My answer is yes, completely and utterly I do.”

He continued: “We’re keenly aware of what people have experienced during lockdown. I mean, banged up in a small apartment while your mother’s dying and you can’t go to the funeral. My wife said to me, if all we’ve done in two years is help one person through their bad time, it’s all worth it.

“So I’m not sure if that meets a criteria of serving what is highest in music, but for me, it’s a real undertaking that I respect. And I am quite prepared to strap on a guitar and rock out to a classic riff in order to achieve it.

“At age 76, why should I give a f---? This is my life.”

Robert Fripp on stage in August 2022

Following the second of two sold-out King Crimson shows at Bunkarmura Orchard Hall in Tokyo in December 2021, Robert Fripp seemingly announced the band’s retirement by tweeting that they had “moved from sound to silence.”

King Crimson also shared Fripp’s words on their own social channels and wrote: “A significant moment in time as King Crimson 'moved from sound to silence' today in Japan.”
