Fire crews have rescued a woman and a dog from a property fire in Newton Abbot, in an incident which is believed to have been started deliberately.

Teams were called to tackle the blaze on the A381 last night (2 September).

Police say no one was injured - and a woman in her 60s from the town has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Officers said: "We were called to assist with Fire service at around 8pm on Tuesday following a fire at a property on the A381 in Newton Abbot.

"No one was injured and the property was made safe.

"A woman in her 60s from Newton Abbot was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. She remains in police custody."

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue added: "Crews attended a report of a fire in a flat.

"On arrival, crews entered wearing breathing apparatus and rescued a female and a dog.

"The fire was then extinguished using 1 hose reel jet.

"Positive pressure ventilation was used to clear the smoke, and cause was deemed as deliberate ignition."
