Thunderstorms are predicted to sweep across parts of England and Wales, possibly causing disruption in areas such as South West England and the West Midlands.

A lightning strike at a property in Glastonbury, Somerset, required an emergency response from local fire services.

Fire engines from nearby stations were quickly dispatched to tackle the incident last night (25/6), where smoke was visible from the second floor of the residential building.

Firefighters, equipped with Breathing Apparatus, worked to control the blaze and requested additional resources, including two more fire engines and support vehicles.

A thorough investigation was conducted to prevent further fire spread, and fortunately, all occupants of the property were accounted for.

Several pieces of firefighting equipment were used at the scene, including hose reel jets, attack jets, a covering jet, breathing apparatus, thermal imaging cameras, ladders, and a roof ladder.

The property suffered 20% damage from the fire and 60% smoke damage, with the cause determined to be accidental.

The fire has been extinguished, and fire crews have left the site.

Chance of power outages

According to forecasts, while not everyone will experience severe weather, there is a chance of power outages and service disruptions for some homes and businesses.

In areas where lightning or flooding occurs, train and bus services could face delays and cancellations. Further risks involve quick flooding of homes and businesses, potential damage from floodwater, lightning, hail, or strong winds.

Motorists should be cautious of sudden flooding and spray, which can lead to challenging driving conditions and road closures.

Residents in at-risk locations should consider preparing a flood plan and emergency kit to protect their property and ensure safety.

Securing movable objects like garden furniture and tents before gusty winds arrive can help minimise potential damage.

Travellers should check road conditions and public transport schedules to avoid delays and amend their plans accordingly.

People can ease the impact of power cuts by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, and mobile power packs in advance.

When outdoors during a thunderstorm, it's vital to seek safe shelter and avoid trees and high ground, which may be prone to lightning strikes.

The Met Office advises staying informed about weather changes and updates to warnings.

Storms are expected to move northeastwards through parts of England and Wales, particularly affecting areas in the south and west with potential gusts of 50 to 60 mph.

Regions likely to be impacted include Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, and more in the South West, alongside areas like Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Worcestershire in the West Midlands.
