Royal Navy veteran Fred Bickham recently celebrated his 103rd birthday in Brixton, Devon, with a special message from First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins.

Fred, currently residing at The Lawns Nursing Home, joined the Navy in 1941 as an Electrical Artificer, eventually serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier HMS Implacable during the closing stages of World War 2.

A lifetime of service and adventure

After the war, Fred continued service aboard HMS Venerable until March 1947, retiring to pursue a career as an engineer in Australia for 15 years.

Later, he returned to the UK, contributing to society as a social worker in Northampton and Oxford.

Fred's remarkable life caught the attention of the Yealm Branch of the Royal British Legion, who ensured his milestone was marked fittingly.

A special birthday honour

On his birthday, Fred received a letter from General Gwyn, presented by the Branch chairman.

The letter expressed warmest congratulations from the Royal Navy, wishing Fred continued health and happiness.

Fred’s niece Anne said: "His framed letter is hanging proudly on his bedroom wall. He has had a wonderful day."
