Community leaders in Torquay have initiated the allocation of £20 million in government funding aimed at enhancing various local projects.

A shortlist of 16 schemes has been approved by the Torquay Place Leadership Board, following an initial selection from more than 30 proposals.

The first distribution of funding has commenced, benefiting six projects directly.

Board chairman Jim Parker expressed confidence in the continuous support for additional ventures, stating that they remain in consideration for future funding.

A similar leadership board is being formed for Paignton, with separate funds earmarked for Brixham.

Over 30 individuals have applied to join the Paignton board, which will steer the allocation of government aid to local initiatives.

The funding for Torquay, totalling £20 million, is intended to be spread over the next decade, focusing on projects that promote thriving communities, stronger neighbourhoods, and increased local empowerment.

Earlier this year, workshops identified key priorities for the funding, including town centre enhancements, neighbourhood improvements, employment aids, and support for cultural and heritage initiatives.

Jim Parker emphasised the community importance of the initiatives, saying there is substantial opportunity to influence positive change.

The projects receiving initial funding are:

Windmill Centre and Windmill Hill improvements

Located in Hele, a significantly deprived area, essential upgrades will be made to the centre and games area, including flooring, plumbing, and safety enhancements.

Higher Union Street Regeneration

This aims to repurpose vacant buildings, support small businesses, and create a community hub to celebrate local history and combat high vacancy rates.

Ellacombe Community Multi-Use Facility

Plans include redeveloping Ellacombe Church into a community hub to address poverty, unemployment, and social isolation in Torbay.

Barton Recreation Ground Community Hub

Major regeneration will transform the playing fields and pavilion into a community hub offering diverse services, including wellbeing support.

Royal Lyceum Theatre Revitalisation

Unleashed Theatre Company plans to restore and enhance the Lyceum, focusing on inclusivity and community engagement.

St Mary Magdalene Church Community Provision

Known as St Mags, the church will continue to offer essential services to vulnerable residents while exploring further community engagement options.
