Fire crews have shared the story of three people, who were rescued from a car stuck in water on Dartmoor over the weekend.

They were called out on Friday (6 June) saying they arrived at the scene 'expecting the worst'.

People on social media have been praising the team for their work in what was a difficult rescue, with Natalie Chalk commenting: "My daughter was Grace, the girl in the back of the vehicle, and I just wanted to say how quick you responded.

"How you kept the girls safe and did an amazing job, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"It was a miracle."

In a statement, fire crews said: "Yesterday at approximately 22:26 we were mobilised alongside colleagues from Ashburton Fire Station and Bovey Tracey Fire Station to reports of a vehicle that had left the road and went over a fifty feet drop and landed on its side on the edge of the river Dart.

"On arrival the officer in charge sent a reconnaissance team down to the waters edge to ascertain the extent of the injured parties.

"The team expected the worst when approaching the vehicle but were amazed and incredibly relieved to see that the three occupants were not injured but trapped within the vehicle due to damage to the car.

"The car was close to the waters edge so a rescue sector was created by the officer in charge and crews got to work stabilising the vehicle and removing the front windscreen so the occupants could be helped out and after being checked over by the ambulance service guided to the road surface above.

"A tricky extrication due to the location of the vehicle and the added hazard of the river and the extra challenges that working close to a waters edge brings us."
