Temporary traffic changes and historical finds in Kingsbridge
New one-way system was implemented on 2nd May
Excavation work in Kingsbridge Fore Street is progressing, leading to both temporary traffic changes and intriguing historical discoveries.
Starting on Saturday 2nd May 2026, Kingsbridge implemented a new temporary extended one-way system aimed at streamlining traffic flow amidst ongoing repair works.
Drivers travelling from Plymouth on the A379 will follow a route through Fore Street into Duncombe Street, Belle Vue Road, Church Street, Bridge Road, and onwards toward West Charleton, Chillington, and Stokenham.
Motorists approaching from West Charleton, Chillington, and Stokenham will continue to use Ilbert Road to access the A381 towards Salcombe or the A379 Cookworthy Road.
Historical Discoveries
During excavations, workers have uncovered interesting artefacts which provide insight into Kingsbridge's past.
These include structures of the historic “Kings Bridge”, pottery shards indicating long-term human habitation, and wrought iron bars which held culvert slates in place.
These findings have been documented and are intended for preservation by the Town Council and museum as items of historical interest.

Excavation sites at Kingsbridge have seen significant progress, with the removal of old culvert structures.
New drainage and culvert installations are underway, with structural sections already arriving on-site.
Traffic management measures, including lane closures on Ilbert Road, have been implemented to ensure workforce safety.
