A local Devon MP is writing to the Environment Agency following a recent investigation by The Times, which has highlighted the issue of illegal sewage spills carried out by South West Water during 2025, surpassing those of other companies in the UK.

It claims South West Water reported over double the number of illegal sewage dry spills compared to Thames Water, making it the worst offender in this regard.

These spills are particularly concerning in the Honiton & Sidmouth constituency.

Locations such as Salcombe Regis, Payhembury, and Dulford have seen significant numbers of illegal spills, tallying 117, 69, and 30 respectively.

The investigation also reveals that Surfers Against Sewage received reports last year of individuals falling ill after bathing in Sidmouth during dry weather.

The Environment Agency's Chief Executive, Phil Duffy, emphasises the need for action plans to be drawn up by water companies by the end of this year for sites experiencing numerous dry-day spills.

Richard Foord MP has called on the Environment Agency to confirm enforcement actions for affected sites within his constituency.

Illegal sewage spills pose hazards to human health and negatively impact freshwater and marine ecosystems.

A South West Water spokesperson has previously said: "Like all our customers, we care deeply about the quality of our region's bathing waters."

Adding that the firm fully understood "how important this is to residents, businesses and visitors".
