Heavy snow and icy conditions have been causing disruption on Devon and Cornwall's roads.

Devon and Cornwall Police urged people to not travel unless absolutely necessary last night (Monday 7 January), and said the A30 between Bodmin and Okehampton was particularly affected by snow.

The Force said it was responding to several crashes across the two counties due to the weather conditions.

It comes amid a yellow weather warning for snow and ice, which is in place until 10am. Another yellow warning for snow is set to come in force from 9am on Wednesday 8 January.

The Met Office says some roads and railways are likely to be affected by icy stretches and sleet/snow showers, with longer journey times.

Gritters have been out across Devon and Cornwall overnight, and following rain over the weekend, we are being warned that last night's freezing temperatures could leave roads "treacherous".

Councillor Stuart Hughes is Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Highway Management: "After so much rain, this week’s forecast is the worst possible combination of weather conditions for anyone travelling around the county.

"The ongoing risk of wintry showers overnight and also on Wednesday will undoubtedly make conditions challenging throughout this week."

Cllr Hughes continued: "Our teams will be trying to get as much salt onto the roads as possible but there’s a concern that despite their best efforts, wintry showers could wash that salt away, so please don’t assume a road has been treated.

"As always, our advice is to drive according to conditions. Please leave plenty of time for your journey, reduce your speed and take extra care."

There are also a number of flood alerts and warnings in place across the two counties.
