Sidmouth seafront pathways are closed as the East Devon District Council urges the public to prioritise safety amid essential cliff repairs.

A recent inspection revealed a growing crack in the cobblestone wall above the Millennium Walkway.

Geotechnical engineers discovered the crack had worsened over the past year, prompting path closures to protect against potential structural failures.

The coastal path from Jacob’s Ladder to the beach near the offshore breakwaters remains shut, along with a section within Connaught Gardens near the Glasshouse.

These measures come as a response to increased cliff instability, with numerous falls reported along the Jurassic Coast.

The area is prone to erosion, posing risks of sudden collapses, especially after extreme weather.

The council emphasises the danger of entering closed sections and advises following safety signs and respecting barriers.

Visitors can access West Beach via a diversion route: Esplanade → Peak Hill Road → West Beach.

Councillor Geoff Jung, in charge of Environment Operations, stressed the importance of public safety.

"Public safety has to come first. We know how frustrating these closures can be, but the risks along this stretch of the Jurassic Coast are very real," Jung said, appealing for cooperation with safety measures.

The council appreciates public patience with ongoing efforts and will update residents and visitors as soon as possible.
