Police are continuing their investigation following the death of Ann Widdecombe in Dartmoor, as detectives work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the case.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman outlined the steps being taken to piece together what happened after 78-year-old Widdecombe was found dead with serious injuries at her Haytor home on Thursday, 9th July.

The arrest of a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder initially formed part of the investigation. However, he has since been released from custody and is no longer considered a suspect.

Police were alerted to Widdecombe’s home by the ambulance service at around 11:40 am. Upon arrival, officers discovered her deceased in the property. Her next-of-kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specially trained officers.

Detectives from the Force Major Crime Investigation Team have launched a murder enquiry and are undertaking comprehensive investigations into Widdecombe’s death. The property remains under police guard with road closures enforced in the surrounding area as forensic officers conduct examinations.

According to Assistant Chief Constable Longman, the investigation is progressing rapidly, with house-to-house and CCTV enquiries taking place. Members of the public can expect to see an increased police presence in Dartmoor as officers work to gather information.

He appealed to anyone who may possess details about the incident to come forward, noting the importance of even seemingly insignificant information. The police urge the public not to speculate about the facts of the case, especially on social media, as this could harm the investigation and cause distress to Widdecombe's family.

The family of Ann Widdecombe has requested privacy during this challenging time. The police have established a Major Incident Public Portal to receive information, along with images or footage related to the incident. Details can also be submitted anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers.

Those wishing to provide information should refer to the operation reference number 50260179119.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez remarked on Ann Widdecombe's character and the efforts of law enforcement.

“Ann Widdecombe was someone I admired as a strong woman in public life who was unwavering in living by her principles. A genuine, funny, and lovely lady. The Chief Constable has told me he appreciates the Home Secretary’s offer to provide whatever support is necessary and I would like to thank my fellow police and crime commissioners who have reached out to offer their support. I know officers and staff will work tirelessly to secure justice for Ann, her family, friends, and fans, and I thank them for the enormous effort they’ve put into this investigation so far,” Hernandez said.
