Plymouth beach shut over asbestos fears
Fibres have been found in the sand at Mount Batten beach prompting health concerns
Plymouth's Mount Batten beach has been closed as of today due to health concerns after tests revealed hazardous levels of asbestos fibres in the sand.
The decision was made by the Director of Public Health, in consultation with the UK Health Security Agency, to protect the public.
Asbestos, previously used in building construction, poses health risks when fibres become airborne.
In 2019, material containing asbestos was first identified on the beach with low levels found in just one of 16 sand samples at that time.
Since then, regular collections of asbestos material have been conducted, gathering mostly small pebbles and rocks containing asbestos that appear to be washed up by the tide.
A recent review of the risk assessment found that asbestos material has not decreased over time.
Recent sand testing showed asbestos fibres in 14 out of 16 samples, with levels classified as 'hazardous waste' by contractors.
Professor Steve Maddern, Plymouth Director of Public Health, emphasised the priority of public safety: "Closing a beach that is well used by local residents is the last thing we want to do and we understand the disappointment this will cause but the latest sand samples are concerning and we must prioritise the safety of the public."
Future tests will assess the risk of airborne fibres and investigate the source of the contamination.
Professor Maddern urged beachgoers to adhere to signage and avoid closed areas: "We need to carry out further tests, including assessing the risk of airborne fibres and conducting a further survey to try and trace exactly where the materials are coming from. I would urge everyone, for their own safety, to take notice of the signage around the beach and not to enter areas that have been closed."
Local people are encouraged to visit other areas of Mount Batten peninsula during the closure, such as the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre.
The council says it will keep local businesses and residents updated and address any queries regarding the closure.
