Plymouth man jailed for abusing partner and lying about her injuries
Joseph Powney sentenced to three years after admitting controlling behaviour
Joseph Powney, a 35-year-old man from Plymouth, has been sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship.
Powney entered a guilty plea on what was intended to be the first day of his trial at Plymouth Crown Court.
The court heard how he repeatedly attacked his partner, later lying about the cause of her injuries, suggesting they were work-related or self-inflicted.
In September 2024, police were called to the victim's home to find her injured outside, with Powney having fled the scene.
He was arrested after handing himself in.
Over the course of approximately 10 months, Powney subjected his partner to numerous assaults and strangulations, resulting in physical injuries and trauma she continues to struggle with.
Detective Constable Kieran Sullivan commented on the case stating, “We welcome the sentence given to Joseph Powney this week. Powney's offending caused the victim both physical and psychological harm.”
A seven-year restraining order has been put in place to protect the victim.
DC Sullivan praised the victim's bravery for reporting the abuse and being prepared to give evidence in court, which was crucial in ensuring justice was served.
“We encourage anyone suffering from abuse within a relationship to report it to us," DC Sullivan said. “Each report will be investigated, and victims will be supported throughout the process.”
Victims are advised to report abuse via the police’s non-emergency number 101 or their website, with the advice to call 999 if in immediate danger.
