People from across the country are gathering in Exeter today (25th April) to voice their concerns over rising fuel costs and to urge the government to take action.

Motorists, farmers, and hauliers are taking part in peaceful protest, to highlight the challenges faced by everyday drivers and workers who depend on their vehicles to earn a living.

Campaign group, Fuel Protest Somerset and Devon, say the rising prices of fuel and energy have put pressure on farmers and hauliers , often forcing them to make difficult financial choices.

They are also calling on the Prime Minster and Chancellor to meet with protest representatives and industry leaders, emphasising the need for urgent reductions in fuel duty and taxes to alleviate the impact of high prices.

Organisers have stressed that the protest's focus is on fairness and survival rather than causing disruption and say no hard shoulders or emergency services will be obstructed.

In response, a government spokesperson said:

“We know motorists are paying more at the pumps because of the war in Iran. This is not our war and that is why the British Government did not join it.

“Tackling the affordability crisis is the government’s number one priority and we are determined to keep costs down for motorists. That’s why we have extended the 5p fuel duty cut and urge for de-escalation.”

The Government has also said it is committed to helping families with the cost of living and red diesel continues to benefit from an 80% tax discount which it has said will save farmers almost £300 million a year.

The 5p fuel duty cut, which includes red diesel, has also been extended until September and the government has said it will continue its discussions with industry leaders to help protect rural communities.
