Newton Abbot’s £5million new Market Hall is finished
A £5million project to create a new market hall for Newton Abbot has been completed
A £5million project to create a new market hall for Newton Abbot has been completed in what a leading councillor has called a ‘landmark moment’ for the town.
Cllr David Palethorpe (Lib Dem, Ipplepen), who is Teignbridge Council’s executive member for major projects, added: “The market hall has been at the heart of the town for generations, and this transformation creates a space that honours that heritage while giving people new reasons to visit, shop and spend time here.”
The council says the project, which began in November 2024, has rejuvenated the Market Hall and surrounding square as a ‘vibrant, flexible destination for shopping, dining and events’.
The aim is to breathe new life into the town centre and attract increased footfall.
New street food units are included, along with a bar, café, improved retail spaces and an area for pop-up stalls and events.
Work included the removal of part of the 1970s food hall, revealing the original Market Square frontage for the first time in decades, and installing a striking new central staircase.
Demolition opened up the new pedestrian route, while there is a new entrance from Market Street and the reinstatement of a walkway linking the Alexandra Cinema with Market Square.
The project has been funded by the UK Government’s Future High Streets Fund.
The council will announce the new operator for the Market Hall in the coming weeks, after which the new operator will work with traders before the market opens in the autumn.
Cllr Palethorpe added: “We’re very grateful to all the market traders, local businesses and residents for their patience through the redevelopment.”
