Exeter's MP has urged the British Museum to allow Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum to play a role in celebrating the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry.

Ahead of the arrival in the UK, for the first time in nearly 1,000 years, in September Steve Race 'highlighted the strength of Exeter’s cultural offering and the city’s unique historical connection to the events depicted in the world-famous tapestry'.

"Ramm is the jewel in Exeter’s cultural crown and is a showcase of our rich history and strong cultural output,” said Mr Race, adding that it, “continues to go from strength to strength.”

Mr Race said RAMM’s success 'demonstrates its ability to deliver exhibitions of national significance and attract new audiences'.

The Bayeux Tapestry will arrive in the UK for the first time since it was created in the UK and sent back to France nearly 1000 years ago in what is expected to be a landmark cultural event.

The British Museum (BM) wants to make the exhibition the centre of a national cultural moment, and Mr Race is urging the leadership of the BM to include Exeter as a key national partner after a recent event in Parliament with the British Museum Director and Helen Hartstein, Manager of RAMM.

The MP added: "This is a major national moment, not just for history buffs but for anyone who is interested in the big moments that have shaped our country.

"It is only right that people across the country have the opportunity to be involved, and I’m grateful to the British Museum for welcoming ideas about how this might work.”
