The historic sea tractor which carries passengers to Devon's famous Burgh Island has undergone a major refit.

The key access for hotel guests - during high tides - has been transporting renowned political, artistic, and literary figures to the island since 1969.

Giles Fuchs, Owner of Burgh Island Hotel, said: “As a beloved fixture of Bigbury-on-Sea’s heritage, the Sea Tractor’s restoration marks an exciting milestone for Burgh Island Hotel and our local community.

"Since 1969, this charming conveyance has connected guests to the island’s shores at high tide, embedding itself in our shared history. The comprehensive refurbishment, from new flooring to our signature livery, ensures she will continue to serve for generations to come.

"This year, the sea tractor has undergone its most extensive refurbishment yet. The restoration included a complete rebuild of the superstructure, new flooring, refurbished stairs, updated life buoys, and a full strip-down to bare metal.

"After being galvanised, the Sea Tractor has been repainted in the hotel’s signature colours, ensuring it remains as iconic as ever while ready for the challenging coastal conditions in which it operates.

In September 2024 it was announced the island was no longer up for sale

"The Sea Tractor, originally built in 1969 and designed by the pioneering engineer Robert Jackson CBE, is known for its quirky charm and ability to navigate the causeway at high tide.

Every part of the strructure of the unique tractor is getting attention - with the engine remaining untouched - and the service due to resume from Friday

"While regular maintenance has been carried out over the years, the latest update was prompted to ensure the sea tractor remains a reliable and safe means of transport for the island’s guests. By addressing these needs, Burgh Island has made the vehicle fit for future generations."
