A family-friendly demo - calling for safer cycling routes - is being planned in Torbay.

The so-called 'Kiddical Mass' is a guided short ride showing the number of kids who could ride to school if they felt safe.

Torbay's cycling mayor Beth Huntley said: "We're really lucky in Torbay as most our young people receive excellent cycle training.

"We know - as parents tells us - they don’t feel safe letting their kids cycle on the road. I would really like to change that and for people to feel safe and let their children ride to school.

"A third of children in Torbay leave primary school either overweight or obese and we know they have very low levels of physical activity as well.

“It would be really great if we could start combining some of their activity with their travel in a more healthy and sustainable way."

The event on Tuesday 19th August meets at 9:45am - with the ride from 10am leaving Esplanade Road in Paignton and is part of the Torbay Children’s Week series of activities.

Torbay Council has previously said it is trying to improve cycling infrastructure in the area.
