A set of licence plates owned by Cornish comedian Jethro have sold at auction for over £30,000.

The personalised plate - with the number registration J35 TER - was owned by the comedian and singer up until his death in 2021 from lymphoma and COVID-19.

In the final years of his life, the comedian had been running a farm and a contracting business from his Devon home near Okehampton.

During the course of his life, he had almost exclusively used the personalised plates, which read the word "JESTER" - including on the Toyota Cruiser that had carried his coffin following his death.

Ahead of the final day of bids, prospective buyers were able to look at the comedian's cars, as well as farming equipment that also had gone under the hammer.

Following the closure of bids, it was revealed the licence plate had sold for £30,500 - over double the initial asking price.

Jethro, whose real name was Geoffrey Rowe was born in St Buryan in Cornwall and soon became one of the most successful comedians during the 1980s and 1990s.

Working alongside the likes of Des O'Connor and Jim Davidson, he became a major star in the entertainment industry - going on to headline the Royal Variety Show in 2001.
