GWR train fire in Devon

30 passengers were assisted to safety

A train fire in Devon has brought disruption to rail services, and 30 passengers assisted to safety.

The fire service was called after reports of a fire underneath the carriage of a GWR passenger train yesterday (Sunday 22 March 2026) afternoon.

The train stopped between its previous stop in Totnes and its next stop in Newton Abbot, with the line between Plymouth and Exeter blocked.

Five fire engines, a Water Bowser, an Environment Protection Unit and Heavy Rescue Vehicle were mobilised.

Crews reported that there was a small fire involving over heated wheel assemblies.

Throughout the incident crews used:

  • One hose reel attack jet
  • One dry powder extinguisher
  • Thermal image camera
  • Short extension ladder
  • Positive pressure ventilation fan for ventilation of carriages

British Transport Police said:

"Officers were called to the line near Newton Abbot at 2.48pm yesterday (22 March) following reports of a fire on a train. Officers attended and the train was safely evacuated."
