GWR give update following Paignton station fire
Great Western Railway have given an update on services after the fire at Paignton station
Three boys have been arrested in connection with the fire.
The boys, aged 13, 15, and 16, were arrested on suspicion of arson in the Paignton area last night (21/7).
They have been released on conditional bail as detectives continue their investigation.
The fire, reported at 6am yesterday morning, was attended by officers from the British Transport Police and crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.
This evening (Wednesday 22nd), Great Western Railway have updated travellers on what they can expect in the coming days as disruption has hampered services today.
GWR and Network Rail Western Performance Director, Daryn McCombe, said:
"We know that Paignton station is much more than a transport hub, it is a familiar landmark at the heart of the town, and we understand that many people have been affected by the impact of the fire. We remain determined to do everything we can to restore services as quickly as possible.
"While the fire has been extinguished, Network Rail still need to carry out further detailed inspections of the station building and surrounding railway infrastructure before trains can return. Safety must come first, and services will only resume once it is safe to do so.
"From tomorrow, we plan to resume a full branch line service between Newton Abbot and Torquay; London Paddington services will terminate at Exeter St Davids, where customers can change onto connecting services.
"Road replacement transport will continue to operate between Torquay and Paignton."
"We will provide further updates as the damage assessment progresses and we have a clearer picture of when a full service to Paignton can resume."
