GWR scales back weekday services between Penzance and Exeter
The rail company explained his was due to issues with its fleet
Great Western Railways (GWR) has confirmed it is cancelling some of its routes across Devon and Cornwall due to a number of issues with its fleet.
Five of its weekday services from Penzance to Plymouth and Exeter will be cancelled, with the changes being brought in from Monday (September 7th).
In a statement, GWR explained that this was down to its fleet, most of which is a Class 175 - which had been brought back into service by the company after years of disuse.
GWR said that since the new timetable was introduced back in May, problems with the Class 175 trains have accounted for around 15% of the service's delays, and around 14% of cancellations.
A spokesperson has now said that these changes are now being introduced as a means to cut down the number of delays and cancellations the operator is facing.
"We know these changes will be frustrating for customers and colleagues, but we believe this approach will provide a more reliable service in the short term while we continue the work needed to bring the fleet up to the standard we expect," the operator said.
GWR is set to update journey planners over the coming days, and customers who had been booked onto any affected train will be contacted directly on their next steps.
