Residents advised to stay indoors due to chemical monitoring and smoke

Fire crews from Plymouth and neighbouring towns have been working to contain a large fire in a metal storage container off Embankment Road, Plymouth, adjacent to the River Laira since the early hours of the morning.

The incident prompted numerous calls to Fire Control due to a significant plume of black smoke.

Initially, seven fire appliances, two water carriers, an aerial ladder platform, command support unit, and a welfare pod were deployed to the scene.

While the fire has now been extinguished, it remains an ongoing situation due to the monitoring of chemical levels and gas cylinders involved.

Current resources have been reduced to two fire appliances and one water carrier on site.

Embankment Road, which was previously closed, has now reopened.

However, local authorities advise residents to stay indoors, keeping windows and doors shut as a precaution.

The fire service will continue to manage the situation and ensure safety in the area.
