Black smoke could be seen from all around yesterday afternoon (11/6) as firefighters from Newton Abbot Fire Station responded to reports of a blaze near Kingsteignton.

On arrival, the crew discovered building materials and tyres engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading toward a nearby van.

The incident commander requested a second appliance for additional water and deployed two firefighters in breathing apparatus to combat the blaze using a Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) jet.

The decision to use CAFS was made due to the remote location of the fire and the absence of nearby hydrants.

Landowners aided efforts by using a telehandler to remove blockwork, allowing the crew access to the entire fire area for complete extinguishment.

The fire originated from an unattended incinerator bin placed too close to flammable materials.

Although believed to have burned out, the incident serves as a stark reminder to keep fires in clear areas, monitor them, and ensure extinguishing means are at hand.

Prompt action by the crew limited damage to the van. Newton Abbot Fire Station expressed gratitude toward their colleagues from Torquay for supporting the operation.
