A fire broke out at Teignmouth Library earlier today, seemingly caused by a battery on the solar panels located on the roof.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service responded and extinguished the fire.

The blaze was confined to the roof and did not impact the building's interior.

As the library was closed at the time, members of the public were instrumental in alerting the fire service.

Libraries Unlimited is assessing the extent of the damage and what repairs are necessary before reopening the library.

In the meantime, borrowers can use other Libraries Unlimited locations in Devon or Torbay.

Items borrowed from Teignmouth will not incur late fees.

Additionally, ebooks and audiobooks are available for free through BorrowBox with a library card.
