Fire service share dramatic photos after blaze in Decoy Woods
Firefighters from Newton Abbot Fire Station were first to arrive and discovered a large section of woodland ablaze
A significant fire erupted in Decoy woods on Monday afternoon, prompting a swift response from firefighters across several stations, including Newton Abbot, Torquay, and Bovey Tracey.
Firefighters from Newton Abbot Fire Station were first to arrive and discovered a large section of woodland ablaze, with flames rapidly spreading into deeper areas of the forest.
Given the challenging conditions, the Incident Commander made the critical decision to call in additional resources.
An extra appliance from Newton Abbot was mobilised, along with a Water Bowser from Torquay Fire Station, which supplied crucial water supplies to combat the flames.
Access to the fire was further hindered by the dense woodland, necessitating the deployment of the ArgoCat ATV from Bovey Tracey Fire Station.
The specialised vehicle is designed to navigate difficult terrains, enabling crews to move efficiently through the area.
Crews faced arduous conditions as they worked tirelessly to control the fire, employing a variety of tools and techniques.
Firefighters used a misting unit from the ATV, multiple beaters, and axes to create barriers and tackle the flames directly.
The main attack line consisted of five lengths of 51mm hoses, each 25 meters long, extending into two full hose reel jets, which measured 54 meters each.
These measures played a crucial role in extinguishing the fire and preventing further spread.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the coordinated effort of the firefighters led to a resolution of the incident, ensuring the area was made safe.
The collaboration across multiple stations highlights the dedication and skill of the firefighters as they effectively managed the situation.
Their hard work and efficient response demonstrate the ability to handle complex and dangerous scenarios, preserving the surrounding environment and ensuring public safety.
