Exmoor offers discounts in return for good deeds - under new trial
It's inspired by a scheme in Denmark
With two million visitors a year, a trial's starting on Exmoor where those who do a good deed - like a two minute litter pick - get discounts at National Park Centres.
Dan James, from the park authority, hopes it will expand in future, explaining: "We've been inspired by a scheme in Copenhagen called 'Copen-Pay' which has been really successful and that involves lots of small businesses being involved."
He says following the initial trial at National Park Centres in Dulverton, Dunster or Lynmouth, the scheme could be extended in 2027 - and hopes local firms also get behind the idea.
"We've got various litter pick boards around the national park where you can borrow a litter picker, grab a bag and just spend two minutes collecting a bit of litter. If everyone does that who visits it will have a huge impact," he said.
Mr James says the pilot supports the ambitions of Exmoor’s Good Tourism Plan, adding: "It's all about how we manage tourism on Exmoor so that it has a net positive impact."
Eligible actions include: picking up litter, travelling by public transport (including cycling), recording wildlife, and sharing positive messages about caring for the National Park on social media.
People taking part choose an action to complete, show evidence of it, and redeem the reward at National Park Centres in Dulverton, Dunster or Lynmouth.
