Police investigating after suspected human remains found on beach

Devon and Cornwall Police are urging anyone with information to come forward

Police in Devon are investigation after suspected human remains were found washed up on a beach.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted to an incident taking place on Westward Ho! beach near Bideford at around 9:30am on Thursday morning (May 22nd).

When officers arrived, they found what is believed to be human remains that had been washed ashore following the current.

Later that day, officers were alerted to a similar incident at nearby Appledore beach, where further suspected human remains - reported to be a leg - were found along the coastline.

The force confirmed that they had collected the items and will be examined further as part of a major investigation.

In a statement, officers asked people not to speculate on what the items could be, adding: "We are asking the public to contact us and avoid posting images on social media if they spot anything concerning along the coastline."

They added that the police will increase their patrols in the local area - particularly along the North Devon coast stretching from Appledore to Westward Ho!.

Meanwhile, they insisted that an investigation into the incident had been opened and enquiries into the discoveries will continue for some time.
