Carers, and friends are being urged by Devon County Council to help vulnerable individuals returning home after gas supplies in South Devon were disrupted across the area.

Four thousand, six hundred properties in Kingsbridge, Malborough and Salcombe were affected by the gas outage on Saturday (January 3).

Wales & West Utilities said this morning that gas supplies to around 75% of properties affected had been restored.

The reconnection of services in Kingsbridge and Malborough is expected to be completed by the end of today (January 7).

Properties in Salcombe impacted by the outage have also been visited, but engineers found access difficult as the owners were not present.

Engineers have posted calling cards through the letter boxes of properties that they were unable to gain entry to, with contact details for residents to arrange a re-visit to reinstate supply.

Steve Brown, Director of Public Health Devon, said:

"Wales & West engineers are doing everything they can to call on households to do what they need to do in order to reinstate the gas supply.

“They've left calling cards at properties where they found residents weren't in.

“We're now asking care agencies, friends and family members who have vulnerable relatives or clients returning to their homes to help by contacting Wales and West on the phone number provided with the calling card, to arrange a re-visit on the other person’s behalf."

Those returning home are urged to contact Wales and West Utilities if their property is still without supply.
