A car transporter has been destroyed after a fire on the M5 in Devon this morning (October 1).
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at 6:38am to reports of a vehicle fire on the M5 between junctions 28 and 29.
A car transporter carrying nine electric vehicles was destroyed in the fire, which was out by 1:30pm.
The fire service said all of the electric cars were "100% damaged by fire" and fire crews used "water and foam jets" to put out the fire.
They added that the cause was "accidental" and that they were no longer treating it as a major incident.
The road was closured in both directions initially between J28 Cullompton and J29 Exeter and a diversion route was in place, with the northbound carriageway reopening later this morning.
National Highways South West confirmed in post on X this evening that lanes 2 and 3 of the southbound carriage way had reopened but that lane 1 would remain closed overnight tonight for resurfacing work.
