Plymouth's Camels Head Fire Station is set to undergo a significant transformation after plans to rebuild it at its existing location were approved.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority agreed to use the current site off Weston Mill Drive at their meeting in February.

Serving the community for over 60 years, the existing building is now outdated and in need of replacement to provide better facilities for firefighters.

The investment is expected to cost several million pounds, marking a substantial commitment to the fire service in Plymouth.

The decision follows last year's engagement exercise conducted by the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, which involved public and partner consultation on potential options for the city's fire service resources.

The new station will provide specialised support required for operations such as those at HMNB Devonport.

Gavin Ellis, Chief Fire Officer for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, commented on the project:

"This is a big step forward in building and enabling a fire service that is fit for the future within Plymouth."

Ellis expressed appreciation for the contributions from all involved parties, particularly praising the staff at Camels Head for their dedication to the community.

The planning and design phase is set to begin, subject to a full business case and planning permission, ensuring continuity in emergency response services during the transition.
