Braunton Fire Station warns of wildfire risks following campfire incident

Braunton Fire Station has issued a warning about the dangers of campfires after an incident on West Hill, Braunton, where firefighters from both Braunton and Barnstaple Fire Stations worked overnight to extinguish a fire believed to have started this way.

The blaze, which threatened the surrounding countryside, was exacerbated by the discovery of aerosol cans thrown into the fire. When heated, aerosols can explode and propel metal fragments dangerously, increasing risks for firefighters and the public.

Ongoing hot and dry weather has left local environments highly susceptible to wildfires, with even a single discarded ember carrying the potential to ignite vast areas of dry grass, undergrowth, and woodland, impacting wildlife, the environment, and property.
