A 10-year-old boy who died in a serious coach crash on Exmoor last week has been named as Oliver Price, as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy.
The collision happened just before 3pm on Thursday 17 July, when a coach carrying pupils and teachers from Minehead Middle School left the A396. A major incident was declared, with emergency services rushing to the scene.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Oliver was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and is being supported by a specially-trained officer.
Two children and one adult remain in hospital in Bristol, with two more adults still receiving treatment in Somerset. Several other children were discharged over the weekend.
Avon and Somerset Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team is examining the cause of the crash. The coach was recovered on Saturday and will now undergo detailed forensic analysis.
Statements are also being taken from passengers and other road users who were in the area at the time. Although the investigation scene work has been completed, the road remains closed while Somerset Council carries out a safety inspection.
Neighbourhood officers will be stationed outside Minehead Middle School in the coming days to offer support to the school community.
Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington said: “Our thoughts are first and foremost with Oliver's family at what must be an unimaginably difficult time. We will continue to keep them updated throughout our investigation.
“This is a tight-knit and resilient community, and we are extremely grateful for the support shown over the past few days. I'd like to thank the emergency services, voluntary groups, and hospital staff for their continued efforts.”
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference 5225201782.
