Boats 'well alight' in Kingswear marina blaze

Devon and Somerset fire crews were called in the early house of this morning (19/8) to a blaze at a local marina.

Two engines were rushed to the scene after it was confirmed three wooden boats were 'well alight'.

One of them eventually sunk.

The incident lasted around four hours, with the official stop being imposed at just after 8am.

In a statement, the emergency service said: "One fire appliance was sent to a small fire seen in the marina area in Kingswear.

"Further calls then stated this was 2 boats on fire, and a second appliance was mobilised.

"Crews arrived on scene and confirmed 3 wooden boats well alight, and got to work extinguishing with 2 breathing apparatus and 1 hose reel jet.

"Coastguard and the lifeboat also attended.

"Crews then requested a further 2 fire appliances for extra water and personnel.

"The fires were extinguished with 1 hose reel jet, 1 main jet and 1 light portable pump using open water.

"1 boat sunk, and a further 2 broke away from their moorings and were recovered by the harbour master.

"Cause of the fire was deemed as accidental."
