An amber cold-health alert is now in place until 12pm on Sunday due to forecast low temperatures

An amber cold-health alert for the South West has been extended until 12pm on Sunday (January 11), with experts warning the cold snap could put vulnerable people at risk.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Met Office say the extension is due to forecasted low temperatures that are expected to impact health and social care services.
The UKHSA is also warning there could be a rise in deaths particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions.
Dr Elizabeth Smout, Lead Consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA South West, said:
“The current cold snap is now expected to last at least until this weekend, according to Met Office forecasts, and we know that prolonged exposure to low temperatures can have a severe impact on people’s health, especially if they are older or have serious health conditions.”
“That is why we are urging people to check in on friends, family and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to the cold and make sure that they’re able to keep themselves warm while this period of cold lasts.
“If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat the rooms where you spend most of your time, such as your living room or bedroom, in the coming days.”
UKHSA has advised the public to take simple steps to stay safe, including:
- Checking weather forecasts and keeping informed via the news
- Stocking up on food and medicine
- Reducing draughts in the home
- Keeping bedroom windows closed
- Wearing layers of thinner clothing
- Ensuring vaccination for flu and COVID-19
- Seeking help when needed through NHS 111 or calling 999 in emergency situations
