Airshow defended as costs double
Torbay Council say it offers a huge knock-on benefit to the local economy and needs support - or it will cease like air shows in other areas

The English Riviera Air show is being defended, as figures show costs for it have almost doubled.
The opposition Lib Dem group's freedom of information showed the Conservative-run council meant to contribute £100,000 to the air show 'however, their contribution ended up being nearly double that at £181,815.37'.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats on the Council, Swithin Long, said: "Losses are going up, as last year the council budgeted £100,000 but ended up spending £133,000."
But Torbay Council Leader Dave Thomas defended the event, saying it gives huge knock-on benefits and should be celebrated.
He reflected: "If you look around Teignmouth don't have an air show anymore, Bournemouth had gone to a five-day air show but that's now cancelled and didn't happen this year.
"Southend-on-Sea cancelled their air show, Margate too."
He added: "I think the business that is driven through out hotels, cafes and restaurants is absolutely marvellous.
"It is something that I 100 per cent support."
The event, was originally underwritten for £100,000 and was intended to reduce in cost by £10,000 a year until it became self-sustaining.
In recent years the event has been extended, with businesses getting behind it and efforts have intensified to control costs and outlay.
The 20207 event is due to return on Friday 4th June and continue until Sunday June 6.
A Torbay Council spokesperson said: “The English Riviera Airshow makes an important contribution to Torbay’s visitor economy, bringing about wider economic and community benefits. Research has indicated that every £1 spent on the event generated a further £15.56 for the local economy.
“We are proud that the airshow is enjoyed and valued by thousands of Torbay residents and visitors every year. The event supports B&B’s and hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, and other traders.
“This year, major sea defence works reduced the available event space and provided altered logistical arrangements. This required additional safety measures and temporary infrastructure.
"It was important that we increased our investment in safety measures to ensure that all who attended were kept safe during the event. Despite the challenges, partners delivered a safe, successful and well-attended event.”
