Scottish Water has revealed water tankers have been drafted in to some parts of the Borders to prop up supplies.

It follows concerns over low water levels at Howden Water Treatment Works, near Selkirk, which is reporting lower than average rainfall in seven of the last nine months.

The plant is supplied by boreholes which draw water from an acquifer - an underground layer of water-bearing rock - near the Ettrick Water.

"While tankers have been used to maintain supplies in the short-term, action has been taken to support the recovery of the aquifer using water from the nearby river," according to a spokesperson for the water company.

"This has been producing positive results and is enabling us to gradually increase drinking water production at the site."

People in Lauder reported interruptions to their water supplies this morning (Wednesday), as temperatures continue to rise.

Water bosses have confirmed this was due to a tanker change over.

A spokesperson told Greatest Hits Radio: "Tankers remain in the area supporting water supplies due to increased demand during the warm weather.

"Customers may continue to experience occasional low pressure or interruptions while this temporary arrangement remains in place.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and thank customers for their patience."

Last year, bottles of water were handed out in Berwickshire following a burst pipe at Rawburn treatment works, near Longformacus.

Meanwhile, the Braw Lads Gathering says water will be available at the start and finish of this evening's rideout to Torwoodlee.

Police are warning motorists a number of road closures will be in place in Galashiels during the event.

A spokesperson for the gala week said: "Following veterinary advice, the rideout will take the heat into consideration and may be slightly slower pace.

"We will have water in an event vehicle following the ride tonight. Water will be provided to all riders at Torwoodlee as well."
