Council announces change to bin collections to protect workers during hot weather
Last updated 23rd Jun 2026
Bin collections across the Scottish Borders could take place earlier than usual over the next three days as temperatures rise.
The local authority is urging residents to ensure their rubbish is ready to be picked up by 6am on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week - to protect crews working in the heat.
The Met Office is forecasting temperatures of up to 31 degrees Celsius in Hawick and Newcastleton on Thursday.
A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: "Due to the hot weather forecast this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, our crews may begin collections earlier than usual to avoid the peak heat of the day.
"Please ensure your bins are placed out for collection by 6am on your scheduled day to avoid being missed.
"Thank you for your cooperation."

Meanwhile, over the border, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents and visitors to take extra care in the countryside as hot, dry conditions continue to increase the risk of wildfires.
Wildfire Team Leader at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, Rob Stacey, said: “The current hot and dry weather means vegetation is extremely vulnerable. It only takes a small spark to start a fire that can spread rapidly and become very difficult to control.
“Many of the wildfires we attend are preventable, and we’re asking everyone to think carefully about their actions when enjoying the outdoors. Simple steps, like avoiding disposable barbecues and campfires, can make a huge difference.”
