What the hail! 'You wouldn’t think it was June...'
Last updated 10th Jun 2026
Weather-watchers in Hawick were left stunned after a wintry shower turned part of the town centre white - just days after celebrating one of the highlights of the summer.
Following a decent spell of weather in the build-up to the Common Riding weekend, locals were this (Tuesday) afternoon reminded how fickle the Scottish climate can be.
Photos shared on social media showed scenes more fitting of December, as hail showers rolled through the Scottish Borders.
Some residents joked they had to check their calendar twice, while others recalled previous years when unseasonably cold weather was followed by a scorching summer.
Local MP John Lamont captured the wintry scenes outside his constituency office in the town's High Street. He posted: "You wouldn’t think it was June…"
Tyre-tracks and footprints were clearly visible where traffic had made its way through the white stuff.
Responding to the MP's post, one commentator said: "Last time this happened it was a heatwave." Another agreed: "Remember 1976 like this early June before one of the best summers."
A third was more damning, adding: "Might kill off some of the millions of weeds round the town!"
A fourth said: "I can mind when Rory Culton was Cornet... Roberton rideoot had to be cancelled because of the amount of snow."
There is better news on the horizon however.
Forecasters predict temperatures are set to climb across the country over the coming weekend.
Dan Stroud, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “How high the temperatures get is still open to a fair amount of debate.
“There is a growing signal that temperatures will be heading comfortably into the high 20s, perhaps breaking 30 degrees again."
