High hopes for new school in Hawick as construction of lift shafts gets underway

Construction of the new High School in Hawick has reached another major milestone, with work now beginning on the £55.9 million building's main structure.

The milestone was marked on Friday, when the school's newly appointed Head Team joined Headteacher Lisa Scott, senior school staff, and local councillors on site.

Initial ground works on the new school began last year, and the start of superstructure works marks the next stage in the project - with construction of the lift shafts now clearly visible.

When completed, the education chiefs say the new school, which is being built on the footprint of the current secondary, will provide modern facilities for pupils, staff and the wider community.

These will include gym halls, a fitness suite, library, art and music studios, and flexible social spaces for learning and community activities.

The school - due to open in 2029 - will also continue to benefit from access to the nearby 3G and 2G sports pitches at Volunteer Park, supporting sport and recreation for both pupils and local residents.

The project is being delivered by Scottish Borders Council in partnership with Hub South East Scotland and main contractor Morrison Construction.

Councillor Julie Pirone, Scottish Borders Council's Executive Member for Education, Lifelong Learning and Youth Development, said: "The new Hawick High School will provide state-of-the-art education to our young people, as well as opportunities and community facilities for the whole town.

"We continue to work closely with our partners to ensure this project is delivered as efficiently as possible."

Pupils, staff, councillors and partners visit the site, where the construction of the lift shafts are now visible.
